The WLS Selection Committee awards four to eight scholarships per year, up to US$25,000 per academic year for a maximum of two years. The awards help the recipients meet the costs of tuition, fees, books, educational supplies, housing, maintenance, and travel to and from the home country and the educational institution.

Description : The UN Trust Fund is the only multilateral grant-making mechanism that supports local, national and regional efforts to end violence against women and girls. Since it began operations in 1997, the UN Trust Fund has distributed more than US$44 million to 291 initiatives in 119 countries and territories. With grants currently ranging from US$300,000 to US$1 million, UN Trust Fund projects focus on supporting the implementation of national laws, policies and action plans that address violence against women. Grantees, comprising government and non-governmental organizations, have engaged diverse actors, such as women’s, men’s and youth groups and networks; indigenous communities; religious and traditional leaders; human rights organizations; academic and research organizations; and the media.

Belfercenter Harvard.edu Fellowships

The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs offers research fellowships during the academic year to individuals who wish to devote their time to research and writing in the fields of science and international affairs. Fellows are selected by the Center's major research programs and are expected to work collaboratively with other Center researchers, as well as on their own projects. The Belfer Center Fellowship Program is known for its selectivity and the high quality of its participants.

Belfer Center fellows research a wide variety of topics, ranging from security issues such as nuclear proliferation and terrorism, to climate change and energy policy. Recent fellows have come from countries as diverse as Pakistan, Russia, Korea, Iran, Israel, India and China, and from professions including academia, business, government and the media.

Increasing number of Yemenis fleeing embattled north, UN agency reports

13 November 2009 – The United Nations refugee agency reported today that an increasing number of civilians are fleeing embattled Sa'ada province in northern Yemen as the fighting between Government troops and Al Houthi rebels rages on.
Those fleeing the violence, the latest round of which began in August, are seeking shelter in camps and with host families in the neighbouring southern provinces of Hajjah and Amran, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

“This new displacement puts increasing pressure on UNHCR’s attempts to alleviate the suffering of the people in need,” spokesperson Andrej Mahecic told reporters in Geneva.

UNHCR estimates that 175,000 people have been affected by the conflict in Yemen since 2004, including those displaced by the latest crisis.

Around 150 new families have been arriving daily at Al Mazrak camp in Hajjah province in recent days, compared with the 20 to 30 that were arriving daily in previous weeks. UNHCR warned that the camp has now exceeded its capacity with nearly 10,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) living there.

Through policy and training support, the project aims to improve access to balanced information on international law and to promote the integration of legal and humanitarian analysis in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Roadmap framework.
